Both Video Doorbell 2 and Video Doorbell 3 send notifications to your phone, tablet, and PC when anyone presses your doorbell or triggers the built-in motion sensors. When you answer the notification, you can see, hear, and speak to visitors from anywhere.
Regarding main differences, Video Doorbell 3 has 2.4GHz and 5GHz dual-band wifi (vs 2.4GHz only on Video Doorbell 2) for enhanced connectivity and customisable motion zones (reducing irrelevant Motion Notifications). Video Doorbell 3 also has improved screw strength, a redesigned easy-to-remove faceplate, and automatic chime connection which makes installing your video doorbell easier than ever.
The main difference is that Video Doorbell 3 Plus includes our Pre-Roll technology, which allows you to see an additional 4 seconds of video before the motion event was even triggered – a first-to-market feature for battery-powered doorbells and unique exclusively to Ring. Pre-Roll video is in black and white and in low resolution to conserve your battery life. Pre-Roll works in well-illuminated areas. Low light conditions may affect the Pre-Roll functionalities.
Video Doorbell 3 is powered by a removable, rechargeable, quick-release battery pack or can be hardwired to existing doorbell wiring for continuous charging. To recharge Video Doorbell 3, simply press the button on the battery pack to release it from the camera, then plug it into a micro-USB cord until fully charged. Slide the battery back into place once it’s charged, and you’re ready to protect your home.
Video Doorbell 3 is backwards compatible with Video Doorbell 2's charging cables. Mounting brackets and corner kit are not backwards compatible, but new versions will be provided in the Video Doorbell 3 Box. The wedge mount is not backwards compatible and the solar chargers are not optimised for Video Doorbell 3, but you can find a new wedge kit for purchase here and a new solar charger for purchase here.
A separate Video Doorbell 1 adapter plate accessory is available now to make the Video Doorbell 3 backwards compatible with your Video Doorbell 1 mounting holes, so new drilling is not required. You can find this in the Spare Parts kit here.
Ideal for when you can't get to the door, or just don't feel like answering, Quick Replies let you set a pre-recorded audio message to play when your doorbell is pressed. Choose from six preset responses, toggle Quick Replies on and off in the Ring app and if you have a Ring Protect subscription you can even ask your visitor to leave a message, which you can playback later. Think of it as an answering machine for your front door.
If you have a subscription to Ring Protect, videos captured by your doorbell will be saved to your Ring account for up to 180 days depending on your location, so you can review them at any time.
Photos captured will be saved to your Ring account for up to 7 days. All Ring Video Doorbells come with a free 30-day trial of Ring Protect.1 During or after a trial, you can choose to purchase a Ring Protect Plan to save your videos and photos.
If you have a subscription to Ring Protect, you can share your videos and photos with anyone, including neighbours, friends, family and local law enforcement. Every Video Doorbell 3 comes with a free 30-day trial of Ring Protect. You can choose to subscribe to Ring Protect at any time to save, review and share all videos and photos captured by your Video Doorbell, and you won’t be charged until the end of your free trial.

Ring Protect is a comprehensive service that activates video recording, saving and sharing for your Stick Up Cam, plus a few extra perks. There are two tiers of Ring Protect: Basic and Plus.
Ring Protect Basic activates video recording and sharing for individual Ring Doorbells and Cameras. It saves all your videos to your Ring account for up to 180 days, so you can review what you missed and share what’s important. Ring Protect Basic subscriptions start at A$4.95 a month per device. Ring Protect Basic only covers one device.
Ring Protect Plus adds even more to your home security. It includes video recording and sharing for unlimited Ring Doorbells and Cameras at your home. Ring Protect Plus subscriptions start at only A$15 a month per home.
No. You can still use Video Doorbell 3 to watch over your home and answer the door from anywhere, even without a subscription to Ring Protect. Without Ring Protect, you’ll still receive real-time notifications when anyone comes to your door, and you can answer the notification to see, hear and speak to visitors in real time right from your mobile device.
However, without a subscription to Ring Protect, you won’t be able to review any videos that you missed in real time, and you won’t be able to save your videos or share them with anyone. Photos will not be captured. Go here to learn more about Ring Protect and to choose a plan that works for you.
