Huge Disappointment

We’ve had our eyes on the Level Bolt Smart Lock for a year or so and were super excited to see it 30% off on Prime Day, so we decided to give it a shot.
We loved the idea of being able to roll up to the house and have the front door dead bolt unlock and then also being able to unlock our front ...door with our phones is a great option to have if we got locked out or if we needed to let someone in when we’re not home.
The install instructions and package look good and were easy enough for me to understand and do.
The first issue I had was that the lock didn’t really fit in the door all that well and I had to take a bit of the wood out of the door hole to make the hole a little bigger on one side so the lock could fit. Initially I gave the Level a pass because there are tons is different door companies, so I could see how that might happen. Our door is only a couple of years old, so I expected it to fit better.
So install was a little harder then I thought it should have been. The next issue was that the strike plate was smaller then the one we had in our door way. You only get one size of a strike plate, so you’ll have to stick with the one Level gives you or try to find some sort of aftermarket one. I couldn’t get our old strike plate to work, the Level needs a strike plate with a bigger then average hole.
Initially syncing it up to my iPhone was pretty easy, and the app seemed to work well.
I got it to lock and unlock, with about every 10th time the app having some sort of issue where it wouldn’t do the operation. I felt like I could live with it not always working when I engage it on the app and then having to hit it again, and then set up the Auto Unlock feature I was really excited about.
We went out to do an errand, locking the front door with the app as we left. It was actually kind of cool that the app kept a log of all the locking and unlocking that happened and wether it was done manually or via the app.
We rolled up to the house and my phone crossed into the hypothetical geofence that was around the Level Bolt lock. We went to open the door and it was locked. I tried to use the app to open the door and it kept on giving me an error. I opened up the lock with my key and bolt kept on wanting to engage the lock and was making a high pitched whine. Even if I unlocked it manually it would force the bolt to lock.
Anyways, I wasn’t going to risk our front door being unlocked for a product I couldn’t trust. I loved the idea of this product. It seemed like it would really be something we’d use, but it doesn’t seem like Level is doing enough software support. I’ve had a similar issue with other “smart” products. If it’s not made by a big company like Apple, Amazon or Google there doesn’t seem to be any support after the initial purchase. Read more

Low profile smart lock

OK, so I've had these Level deadbolt locks for 2 months now. I actually bought them opened box cuz I wasn't so sure they would work for my application. So far it's been good. I've never owned a smart lock so I don't have something to compare it to. I didn't like how big the rest of the smart locks l...ook so I didn't want to even try them. Ok so here's the breakdown

1. I have a ring alarm system and a ring doorbell that does work with sidewalk. So I need it something to work with that on one app. I also use Samsung phones not apple so I need it to work with that too. So far, everything works.
Setting it up to my phone was a challenge! One thing, if you get an open box Level, make sure you do a hard reset on the Level and make sure you have a new battery. It's very important cuz I waisted a lot of time trying to connect the unit but couldn't cuz it was still connected to the last person. Anyways, even after that, it took a while to connect to the Level app. Like 10 times or more each deadbolt! I was literally next to the door too.. Yeah have patience.

The installation:
The installation was easy and challenging at the same time. I have attached pictures to better explain. I was changing my old locks and bought a set for my regular door and a set for my security metal door. The set I got for my regular door didn't work with the Level deadbolt system. See pictures with the 2 spindles. Another deadbolt didn't work because the spindle was too thick. See the other picture..
Another problem I encountered, the lock on my screen door wouldn't lock unless you pull the door in a little il, this doesn't work with this smart lock or any. I don't think. If you don't have tools and are not comfortable working on thing this could be and issue. My regular door says easy.. I did have to make the hole on the door frame bigger so the cylinder could go in without getting jammed. No big deal.

How it works :
The Level deadbolt work good with my ring app, ones you set it up and connect it on the Alex app you can enable it on the ring app. That was easy.
Charing with level app with my wife was also annoying, eventually it worked! She also has the ring app so she has access from there.. She doesn't really need the Level app. If you want to know who is opening the door they would need their own profile on the Level app. One thing I found out, when the deadbolt loses connection all I do is reset my ring doorbell and it reconnects, 100% of the time this works, it might take a couple of minutes but it works. Again, I have them connected to my doorbell not on Bluetooth. So far, I'm happy with this, they work I would say 90 to 95 percent of the time, if it disconnects just reset whatever doorbell or camera that it's connected too. Oh, I have kwikset deadbolt with the smarkey feature.
I've tried to give you answers to questions I had so I hope I helped you.. This does work with the ring app with the a camera/doorbell that supports Amazon sidewalk, It works with Samsung phones, it works on metal security doors, with some modifications and it works 90 to 95% of the time.. It's been a week since I've installed the Level Bolt (wanted to test it out before leaving a review), and it's been great! I've previously used other smart locks in the past but didn't love them due to various issues so I thought I'd might as well give the Level smart lock a try. I first heard about... Level from a friend over a year ago, and recently decided to try the Level on my last remaining "dumb" lock. In an effort to maintain social distancing in light of covid, I've installed the Level Bolt to my street level side entry, which is the primary entrance for our guests and home maintenance personnel (access to our in-law suite and backyard).

As mentioned, I have a number of other smart locks installed in my home, including the August Yale for my front door. However, it loses connection several times a week because it is dependent on our wifi. Compared to the August, I prefer the use of bluetooth for the Level Bolt. Our living space is two floors up from the side entry, and after a week, I can attest to the connectivity being on point! I'll continue to test in the coming weeks but will likely make the switch to the Level smart lock for my other doors.

What appealed to me about the Level Bolt was how discreet it was. Since we already had a smart lock on our main entrance, I wanted a lock that was unassuming for our side entry. I also wanted a lock that allows me to keep the original knob and key, which is helpful because my 65 year old dad doesn't like change, and he often uses the side entry to access the in-law suite when he visits. Not only that but the smart lock allows us to unlock the door for our home maintenance personnel (e.g., gardener, handyman, pest control, etc.), allowing us to maintain social distancing. I also like the ability to give specific access to other visitors, whether they have an iPhone or Android.

I had some initial troubles with the install, since the side entry door was built in the 1930’s (typical San Francisco house), and the strike plate provided was a bit bigger than my door frame cutout. I called Level Support who kindly and patiently walked me through how to chisel the frame (using a Philips head screwdriver and hammer), and I'm proud to say I got it to fit in under 2 minutes.

Once I got over the initial hurdle, I'm happy to say the rest of the install was a breeze, and the whole process took less than 30 minutes. The app is responsive, easy to use, and I appreciate their font choice! Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase, and look forward to seeing more Level products. I may switch it out for the Touch model once more colors come out. Read more
