24/7 Backup Internet and Extra Data
24/7 Backup Internet¹ is a feature in Ring Home Premium that provides internet connection to wifi-enabled devices during an internet or power outage. Backup Internet functionality is built into the Ring Alarm Pro, and it works like a router for your devices. To use Backup Internet, you need a Ring Alarm Pro device and an active Ring Home Premium subscription or trial.
During an internet or power outage at your home, 24/7 Backup Internet will step in to provide your wifi-enabled devices with a cellular internet connection. Backup Internet includes 3GB of data, which you can use to browse the web, video chat, and stream content on laptops, tablets, smart phones, and similar devices. The 3GB of included data automatically reset at the start of each billing cycle. If you need more than 3GB of data, you can opt into Extra Data at $3 per additional 1GB. You can monitor your data usage on the Ring app. Unused data at the end of a billing period does not rollover to the next billing period.
How Backup Internet works
During an internet outage
An internet outage occurs when your wifi router or modem goes offline, but your home still has power. During an internet outage, the Ring Alarm Pro uses a cellular connection to provide any Ring and non-Ring devices with wifi.
To use Backup Internet during an internet outage, you’ll need:
- An active Ring Home Premium Plan subscription or trial.
- Available data.
During a power outage
A power outage occurs when your home loses power and your wifi router and modem go offline. During a power outage, the Ring Alarm Pro uses Ring Power Packs (sold separately) to stay powered on. Then, the Ring Alarm Pro uses a cellular connection to provide any Ring and non-Ring devices with wifi. If you do not have Ring Power Packs for your Ring Alarm Pro, your devices will not connect to Backup Internet, regardless of whether you have available data.
To use Backup Internet during a power outage, you’ll need:
- An active Ring Home Premium Plan or trial.

Includes 3GB of data per month
Backup Internet automatically comes with 3GB of included monthly data at no additional charge. When your connected devices use Backup Internet to surf the web or stream content, the included data will be used first.
What you can do with 3GB of data
- Record approx. 300 Ring clips.
- Watch approx. 1.5 hours of streaming video (Netflix, Hulu, or Prime Video).
- Video chat on Zoom for approx. 2 hours.
When you’re close to reaching your included 3GB data limit, we’ll send you notifications via email and the Ring app. Once you’ve used all of your included data, Backup Internet will turn off and your internet-connected devices won’t connect to wifi through the Ring Alarm (but they may still connect to wifi through your internet service provider). Your Ring Alarm Pro will switch to cellular backup so it can continue to send notifications in the event of an emergency.
Backup Internet is enabled by default when you set-up a new Ring Alarm Pro, and the 3GB of included data can be used right away. You can disable Backup Internet from the Ring app.
Add Extra Data
If you need more than the 3GB of included data, you can opt in to Extra Data at $3 per additional 1GB. When turned on, Extra Data keeps your devices online once the 3GB of included data runs out. We’ll send you email and Ring app notifications when your 3GB of included data has run out, and a notification for each additional 1GB of Extra Data you use. You can opt out of Extra Data at any time on Ring.com.
You can review your Extra Data charges in your Billing History.
Opt-out of Extra Data
If you think you won’t need more than 3GB of data in a billing cycle, you can opt out of Extra Data on Ring.com. Your devices can still use up to 3GB of Backup Internet each month. We’ll send you email and Ring app notifications when you use all of your included data. If you change your mind, you can opt in to Extra Data at any time on Ring.com.
Select which devices to keep connected
You can select which devices you want to keep connected to Backup Internet from the Ring and eero apps by toggling LTE on/off. Please note, your devices must be charged or have an external power source to connect to Backup Internet. Backup Internet uses cellular connectivity and is subject to availability and coverage in your area.
