Fixing Audio and Sound Issues on Your Ring Device

Learn tips to help troubleshoot why your Ring device may be experiencing warped sound or no audio.

Things to check

Check the volume on your mobile device

Make sure the external volume is up on your mobile device (on the device where you're viewing your Ring videos or Live View).

Check Ring app permissions on your mobile device

Verify all necessary permissions for the Ring app in your mobile device settings. Example: Microphone permissions are enabled.

For Apple (iOS):

  1. Open the
    Settings
    app.
  2. Tap on
    Privacy & Security
    .
  3. Tap on
    Microphone
    .
  4. Next to the Ring app, make sure the toggle for
    Microphone
    is on.

For Android:

  1. Open the
    Settings
    app.
  2. Tap on
    Apps, Applications, or Application Manager
    .
  3. Tap on the
    Ring
    app.
  4. Tap on
    Permissions
    .
  5. Make sure the toggle for
    Microphone
    is on for the Ring app.

Check for Ring app updates

For the latest features and fixes, make sure to update the Ring app to the latest version. To get started, choose your mobile device's operating system below:

Make sure your mobile device has service

If your phone or tablet has poor service or internet, it could be affecting Live View or your video downloads.

See if your mobile device is connected to Bluetooth

Try turning Bluetooth off, then open Live View or view a recorded Ring video.

Check your Ring device's signal strength

Poor wifi can often cause Ring device issues, including with recording or capturing audio.

  1. Open the Ring app to the main dashboard.

  2. Tap more (•••) on the camera you want to access.

  3. Tap your device's Settings.

  4. Tap the Device Health tile.

  5. Under the Network section, you'll see your device's
    Signal Strength
    .

If your Signal Strength (RSSI) is above 60, your Ring device likely has a poor connection to your location's wifi. Try moving your wifi router closer to your Ring device.

Things to try

Test Live View and Two-Way Talk

Open Live View in the Ring app and see if your Ring device's microphone is enabled.

  1. Open the Ring app to the main dashboard.

  2. Tap the camera preview to open Live View on your Ring device.

  3. If necessary, Tap to Go Live.

  4. Check to make sure the microphone icon is enabled. You can also press the phone icon.
  5. Speak into your mobile device near your camera or doorbell to hear audio from the device's speaker.

Check your audio privacy settings

You may have your audio settings turned off for privacy reasons.

  1. Open the Ring app to the main dashboard.

  2. Tap more (•••) on the camera you want to access.

  3. Tap your device's Settings.

  4. Tap the Device Settings tile.

  5. Tap
    Privacy Settings
    .
  6. Make sure
    Audio Streaming and Recording
     is enabled.

Reboot your Ring doorbell or camera

If you Ring device is connected to wifi, you can attempt to reboot it. 

  1. Open the Ring app to the main dashboard.

  2. Tap more (•••) on the camera you want to access.

  3. Tap your device's Settings.

  4. Tap the Device Health tile.

  5. Scroll down and tap
    Reboot This Device
    .
  6. Wait a few minutes for your device to reboot.

Reset your Ring device

If the previous actions have not resolved the audio behaviors, try resetting the device.

  1. Reset by holding down the setup button on the device for 20 seconds.
  2. Observe the Ring device light pattern and allow a few minutes to reboot.
  3. If the Ring device was previously set up, it will need to be set up again.
  4. After the reset is complete, test another event and check the audio.
