Ring Neighborhood Guard service

What to know

Ring Neighborhood Guard is a subscription service1 that provides licensed, professional security guards who proactively patrol your neighborhood 24/7 and respond to calls, alarms, and security concerns.

Guards will provide the below services:

  • Visit your property on demand and examine all exterior areas, question, and identify any unauthorized persons on site
  • Respond to Ring Alarm events when a Contact Sensor, Motion Detector, or Glass Break Sensor is triggered
  • Request emergency responders (police, fire, or medical) if escalation is needed
  • Respond to security posts in the Neighbors app

Important note: Guards are not a substitute for emergency services. Always call 911 in a life-threatening emergency. Guards might be armed but will not use force unless there is an imminent and unavoidable threat of physical harm.

Neighborhood Guard eligibility

Neighborhood Guard eligibility is based on the address linked to your Ring or Neighbors app account and requires a minimum number of active subscribers. Every neighbor who joins brings your community closer to the minimum needed for 24/7 patrol and guard response.

  • To be eligible for Neighborhood Guard, your address must be within the service area and include your house number or unit number for accurate dispatch.
  • If you have multiple addresses, each is checked separately.
  • If your location is not eligible for Neighborhood Guard, you will not see promotions for the service.
  • After enough neighbors in your location sign up, any additional neighbors who sign up will add additional patrols to your neighborhood at no extra cost.
  • You do not need a Ring device to use Neighborhood Guard, but Neighborhood Guard is compatible with Ring Alarm.
  • A Ring account and the Ring app are required to access all Neighborhood Guard features, including the Call Guard button.

How to sign up for Neighborhood Guard

You can sign up for Neighborhood Guard through the promotional card on the Dashboard of the Ring or Neighbors app, or by clicking Sign Up on the Neighborhood Guard page. After signing up, you will receive a confirmation email with:

  • The cost of Neighborhood Guard and your billing cycle
  • A reminder that billing starts only when the service activates
  • A link to track activation progress in your area
  • A link to invite your neighbors

A progress bar in the app shows how close your area is to meeting the minimum number of subscribers for activation. After the minimum number of subscribers is met, you will receive a three-day notice with your service start date, first billing date, and what to expect. If the service has not activated after 90 days, you will receive an email with:

  • A status update on your area
  • A reminder that activation can still occur within the next 90 days
  • A notice that you will receive three days of warning before billing starts
  • A link to cancel
  • A link to share with neighbors

If the service does not activate within 180 days:

  • On day 173, you will receive an Expiring Soon notification.
  • Signing up again resets your 180-day window.
  • On day 180, your subscription moves to Expired status.
  • You are not charged for the subscription.
  • The Local Guard tile is removed 14 days after the subscription expires.

The Local Guard tile in the Ring app displays your service status:

Expiring Soon
Your 180-day sign-up window is ending. You can sign up again to reset the window or cancel.
Expired
The 180-day window ended with no charge. You can re-reserve.
Service Ending
Service ends in 90 days due to insufficient subscribers. Invite neighbors to keep the service going.

How to refer neighbors

After you have reserved your subscription, you can invite neighbors to join. To invite neighbors from the Ring app:

  1. Tap the
    Local Guard
    tile on your home screen.
  2. Tap
    Invite Neighbors
    .
  3. Choose how to share the link. You can use an app such as Messages or Mail, or directly copy the link.

Your personalized referral link is also in the confirmation email you received after reserving, or in the Neighbors app.

If someone outside the service area taps your link, they see a message that the service is not available in their area.

Billing and payments

Your payment method is verified when you sign up, but you are not charged until the service is activated. There is no guarantee the service will activate, and your sign up window expires after 180 days if it does not.

  • You receive three days of notice before your first charge. If you join after the service is already active, you are charged immediately.
  • The service is billed on a recurring monthly cycle.
  • You can pay with a saved card or Apple Pay. If payment fails at activation, your service still begins and you are contacted to update your payment method.

How to cancel your Neighborhood Guard subscription

To cancel your Neighborhood Guard subscription in the Ring app:

  1. Tap the
    Local Guard
    tile.
  2. Tap
    Manage Subscription
    .
  3. Tap

    in the Neighborhood Guard section.
  4. Tap
    Cancel Plan
    .

After you cancel the plan, you might see an option to provide feedback. This step is optional.

What happens after you cancel

  • If you cancel before the Neighborhood Guard service is activated, your reservation is canceled and the Local Guard tile disappears.
  • If you cancel after the Neighborhood Guard service is activated, the service continues through the end of your current billing period.
  • If you change your address to a location outside the service area, your subscription is canceled.
  • If there are not enough active subscribers, the service might be suspended. You receive a 90-day notice by email and in the app. During this time, invite neighbors to help keep the service going.

Ring Alarm and guard response

Professional Monitoring2 is included with Neighborhood Guard for neighbors with a Ring Solo or Multi plan. Your alarm response automatically switches from police to guard response when the service activates. You will also receive a notification explaining this change.

Important note: If you have a Ring Pro Protect plan or Virtual Security Guard (VSG)3, you already have Professional Monitoring.

How to switch back to police response

To switch back to police response in the Ring app:

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap
    Monitoring Settings
    .
  3. Change your dispatch preference to police response.

Changing back to police response will go into effect immediately.

  • If Neighborhood Guard is suspended, alarm response automatically switches back to police and you are notified by email.
  • With a Ring Solo, Multi, or Pro plan, Neighborhood Guard adds automatic dispatch when an alarm is triggered.
  • With VSG, Neighborhood Guard adds automatic dispatch for VSG escalations.
