Video Descriptions (beta)

Video Descriptions1 enhances your Video Preview Alerts with AI-powered insights. When your Ring cameras and doorbells detect motion or when someone rings your doorbell, you'll receive notifications that not only show animated previews of the recording but also include AI-generated textual descriptions of the activity. Now you can quickly understand what's happening around your home or business at a glance.

A compatible Ring subscription is required. Video Descriptions are available in English only.

During the beta stage of Video Descriptions, you may occasionally see two notifications on your unlocked phone screen. This is expected behaviour as we update previously sent notifications with additional information. We're continuously working to improve this experience.

Note: A Ring beta feature is a new or experimental feature. This allows Ring to gather valuable user feedback, identify bugs, and refine it. As a beta feature, results may vary initially as we continue to improve. The early access to innovative functionalities allows users to experience them firsthand and contribute to their development by sharing their experiences and insights.

How to use Video Descriptions on your mobile device

When a notification appears, you will be able to read the AI-generated description in the body of the notification. You can also tap the notification to expand it.

Why is one of my Video Descriptions inaccurate?

While Ring's Video Descriptions uses advanced AI technology to analyse video content, it may occasionally provide descriptions that aren't completely accurate. This can happen due to various factors such as:

  • Limited visibility or poor lighting conditions
  • Fast-moving objects or people
  • Complex or overlapping activities in the scene
  • Weather conditions affecting video quality
  • Distance of the subject from the camera
