Understanding regional settings for Ring device setup

What to know

Ring devices that connect to the Sidewalk network require a one-time regional configuration during setup. The Ring app handles this automatically, no action is needed on your part. This article covers how regional configuration works, what to do if you're in an unsupported region, and how to update your configuration if you move.

What is Sidewalk?

Sidewalk is a shared neighborhood network that extends the range of compatible devices.

Visit the Amazon Sidewalk page to learn more about regional coverage, compatible devices, and how Sidewalk works in your area.

Why your Ring device needs your region

Certain Sidewalk-connected devices must comply with regional wireless regulations. These regulations set limits on the power wireless settings your device can use.

Your device's firmware is updated with the appropriate regional configuration during the setup process. This ensures your device operates within the approved wireless settings limits for your area.

What to do if you are in an unsupported region

If the Ring app detects that you are in a region that is not currently supported, setup will not proceed.

If you see an error indicating your region is unsupported, check your phone's settings to confirm that location services are turned on. Then, open the Ring app and verify it has permission to access your location.

  1. Tap the menu in the upper right.
  2. Tap
    Settings
    .
  3. Verify that your address is accurate and up to date.

If you are traveling, return to a supported region to complete setup.

How to re-run setup after moving to a new region

If you move to a country in a different region after your initial setup, you’ll need to re-run the device setup process for any Sidewalk-connected devices.

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap
    Set Up a Device
    .
  3. Follow the prompts to set up your device again.

The Ring app detects your new region automatically during this process.

What to do if you receive the region unsupported error in a supported region

This message means the Ring app has determined you are in a country where this device is not approved for use. If you are in a country where the device is sold, the app has likely detected your phone's connection as coming from a different country.  Work through these checks, trying setup again after each one:

Turn off any VPN on your phone.

A VPN can make your connection appear to come from another country. Turn it off, or configure it to exclude Ring traffic. Visit Understanding the Ring app and VPNs article for more details.

Connect to a home wifi network with working internet access.

  • Avoid work, school, guest, and hotel networks. These may route traffic through another country or require a sign-in page that blocks the Ring app from determining your region.
  • If you're on mobile data, switch to your home wifi. Mobile data can appear to come from your SIM provider's home country, especially when roaming or using a foreign SIM.

Check for a VPN on your home router.

A router-level VPN makes every device on your network appear to be in another country. Turn it off during setup. Some satellite internet services can also geolocate to a neighboring country. If you can't disable the service, use mobile data from a local SIM for setup, then reconnect to your home wifi afterward.

Try a different connection.

Occasionally, an internet provider's IP addresses are registered to the wrong country. If your home wifi triggers this error with no VPN active, try mobile data from a local SIM or another network.

If you are traveling, wait until you are home.

Set up the device in the country where it will be used.   If none of these steps resolve the issue, the device may not be approved for use in your country.
