Understanding CO Alarms with Ring Alarm Professional Monitoring
Ring Alarm provides carbon monoxide (CO) professional monitoring¹ for residential neighbors.
To have smoke & CO monitoring¹, you will need one of the following:
- with an existing battery operated or hardwired smoke or CO detector
Professional Monitoring is an add-on plan that first requires a compatible Ring Home subscription. Both sold separately. Service available within the U.S. (all 50 states, but not U.S. territories) and in Canada (excluding Quebec). Ring does not own its monitoring center. Smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring is not available for business or commercially zoned addresses. See Ring Alarm licenses at: ring.com/licenses. Additional fees may be required for permits, false alarms, or Alarm Verified Guard Response, depending on your local jurisdiction.
What Happens When There Is a Carbon Monoxide Alarm?
How is the CO alarm triggered? It is triggered by the First Alert Smoke and CO detector or the Ring Alarm Smoke & CO Listener when Ring Alarm is Armed Home, Away, or Disarmed.²
CO Alarm Response Plan. When a carbon monoxide alarm sounds in your home, a CO signal is sent. The monitoring¹ center will immediately request a fire response and then call your emergency contacts to inform them that the fire department has been dispatched.
CO Alarms cannot be canceled. Signals from the CO detector cannot be canceled. The regulations where you live require the fire department to check on every CO alarm in order to make sure everyone is safe.
Ring Alarm and all Ring Alarm accessories require a compatible Ring subscription (sold separately) for digital arming/disarming and certain other in-app features.

Can I Tell If Carbon Monoxide Is Present in My Home?
No. Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, poisonous gas. It can live in your home undetected and cause serious harm to you and your family if present. Only CO detectors can detect if there is a carbon monoxide leak in your home.
What Should I Do If the Carbon Monoxide Alarm Is Triggered?
Follow the instructions from the monitoring¹ center, or your local fire department. Usually, they will ask that you and your family exit the premises immediately.
Can I Use Ring Alarm CO Monitoring At a Business?
Ring cannot provide professional smoke and CO monitoring at business locations due to strict local regulations across the U.S. and Canada. This means that neighbors who set up a Ring Alarm with professional monitoring¹ at a business or commercially-zoned address cannot monitor for smoke or carbon monoxide by Ring.

If you experienced a false carbon monoxide alarm with the Ring Smoke & CO Listener, here are some tips:
- If you were testing your Listener, make sure that you are still in test mode when triggering a carbon monoxide test.
- Make sure your Smoke & CO Listener is installed at the appropriate distance from your smoke or CO alarm (within 6 inches).
- Do not install multiple Listeners for one large area.
Can I Use Smoke and CO Alarms with Self Monitoring?
Yes. Your Alarm or Alarm Pro Base Station siren will sound locally in your home. You and your shared users will receive push notifications from the Ring App and e-mails about the event. Get to safety and call 911.
You can get this monitoring in any mode — Home, Away, and Disarmed. If there is no professional monitoring¹, you’ll need to call emergency responders yourself.
