Troubleshooting Power Modes
Learn how to troubleshoot power mode issues and switch between Wired Mode and Battery Mode to optimize the performance of your Spotlight Cam Pro, Spotlight Cam Plus, Stick Up Cam Pro or Stick Up Cam (3rd Gen).
Changing your power to Battery Mode
If you are using only a battery or Solar Panel to power your device, make sure your device is in Battery Mode to ensure your battery doesn’t drain too fast.
Open the Ring app to the main dashboard.
Tap more (•••) on the camera you want to access.
Tap your device's Settings.
Tap the Device Settings tile.
- TapGeneral Settings.
- TapPower Mode.
- SelectBattery Mode.
Stick Up Cam (3rd Gen) and Stick Up Cam Pro Battery Mode Optimization
- Video Recording Length is set to Auto.
- Snapshot Capture is set to one hour.
- Advanced Motion Detection (AMD) is enabled by default.
- When AMD is enabled by default in battery mode, polygonal motion zones without crop do not change.
- Motion Zones with crop are deleted, and replaced by one default Motion Zone in battery mode.
- Motion Sensitivity is set to default - 5.
- Motion Frequency is set to Standard.
- Pre-roll is disabled for Stick Up Cam (3rd Gen) only.
Spotlight Cam Plus and Pro Battery Mode Optimization
- Video Recording Length is set to Auto.
- Snapshot Capture is set to one hour.
- Light brightness is limited to 60%.
- Positive light schedules are disabled.
Troubleshooting a third-party power adapter
To ensure your device functions properly and avoid shutdowns, check that your power adapter meets the minimum wattage requirements for your device:
- Spotlight Cam Pro and Spotlight Cam Plus: 9VDC, 18W
- Stick Up Cam Pro and Stick Up Cam (3rd Gen): 5VDC, 12.5W
Otherwise, switch to Battery Mode (using the steps above).
Troubleshooting a Ring Power Adapter or Hardwired Kit
To ensure your device functions properly and avoid shutdowns:
- Unplug the connector and clean away any water or dust that may be causing a weak connection.
- Make sure the connector is firmly inserted.
- Verify that the power adapter is not physically damaged, or show signs of water damage.
- Verify that only Ring brand accessories are being used.
Troubleshooting a battery, Solar Panel, or third-party power adapter
To use your device in Wired Mode for optimum performance, purchase a Ring Power Adapter or Ring Hardwired Kit. Ring Power Adapters and Hardwired Kit compatibility

Low Power Mode
Your device may temporarily switch to Low Power Mode if it’s in Wired Mode but doesn't have a valid mains or hardwired power source. In this case, the Ring app will automatically optimize some feature settings to conserve energy. These settings can only be changed once the device is connected to a valid mains or hardwired power source, or if you manually switch to Battery Mode.
Auto-optimized features in Low Power Mode
- Motion Sensitivity: Optimal level
- Snapshot Capture Frequency: Every 1 hour
- Video Recording Length: Auto
- Light Brightness(Spotlight Cam Plus and Spotlight Cam Pro only): Optimal level
- Light Schedules(Spotlight Cam Plus and Spotlight Cam Pro only): May be paused
- Motion Zones(Stick Up Cam (3rd Gen) only): Reduced field of view
- Pre-Roll(Stick Up Cam (3rd Gen) only): Turned off
