Arming and disarming Ring devices with Alexa

You can arm and disarm your Ring Alarm,1 security cameras, and video doorbells2 using voice commands with your Amazon Echo device.

Getting started

Before setting up voice control, make sure you have:

  • A compatible Amazon Echo device
  • A Ring Alarm, security camera, or video doorbell
  • The Amazon Alexa app installed on your mobile device
  • The Ring app installed on your mobile device
  • A Ring subscription (required for using Modes in the Ring app)

Step 1: Enable Modes in the Ring app

Modes is required for digital arming and disarming Ring Alarm with Alexa. Ring Alarm systems come with Modes already enabled, so no setup is required. If you have Ring cameras or doorbells, you'll need to enable Modes first.

Step 2: Link your Ring and Amazon accounts

Connect your compatible Amazon Echo, Echo Show, Echo Spot, Echo Hub, Fire TV, or Fire Tablet to your Ring device to use Alexa voice commands. Learn how to link Amazon Alexa-enabled devices with Ring devices.

Enabling the Ring Skill in the Alexa app

  1. Open the Alexa app. If you don’t have it, install it on your mobile device.
  2. Go to
    Skills & Games
    in the main menu.
  3. Search for Ring and tap
    Enable
    .
  4. Sign in to your Ring account to link it with Alexa. Your Ring devices should connect automatically. If not, use
    Try Discovery Again
    . If you don’t want a particular device to connect, tap
    Forget
    .

Step 3: Set up your passcode

For security, you'll need a four-digit passcode to disarm your devices:

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap
    Devices
    , then
    All Devices
    .
  3. Select your Ring device from the list.
  4. Under
    Settings
    , toggle on
    Disarm by Voice
    .
  5. Create or edit a four-digit passcode when prompted.

Step 4: Use voice commands for your Ring devices

Use these voice command examples to control your Ring system using your Alexa-enabled device.

Arm your system
"Alexa, arm Ring."
"Alexa, I'm leaving."
Disarm your system
"Alexa, disarm Ring" (You'll need to say your four-digit passcode).
"Alexa, I'm home" (you'll need to say your four-digit passcode).
Check status
"Alexa, is Ring armed?"

When you arm your system, Alexa will confirm: "Ring is armed in Home Mode" or "Ring is armed in Away Mode."

Both the Ring and Alexa apps record when you arm or disarm your system using voice commands. Check the History section in the Ring app to review recent activity.

Troubleshooting voice commands

If voice commands are not working to arm or disarm your Ring system, check the following:

  • Verify your Ring subscription is active.
  • Check that
    Disarm by Voice
    is toggled on in device settings.
  • Make sure you're speaking clearly.

Step 5: Create custom routines for Ring Alarm (optional)

Set up personalized phrases to control your Ring Alarm:

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap
    More
    in the bottom right corner.
  3. Tap
    Routines
    , then tap the plus sign

  4. Enter a routine name (like "Goodnight routine").
  5. Tap
    Next
    .
  6. Tap
    When This Happens
    , select
    Voice
    .
  7. Enter your desired phrase (like "Alexa, goodnight").
  8. Tap
    Action

    Add Action

  9. Set the action to arm your Ring Alarm.
  10. Test your routine using the play button or your custom phrase.
