Make Your Alarm Ignore Certain Sensors

Learn how to bypass a device in order to instruct your Ring Alarm to ignore a specific, compatible alarm sensor when the Alarm is armed.

This will come in handy when:

  • You want to leave a particular sensor unmonitored (whether the system is self-monitored or professionally monitored¹) while continuing to monitor the other parts of your Alarm.
  • Example
: You're at home and want to monitor (whether self-monitored or professionally monitored¹) the exterior sensors but leave the back door open for the dog.
  • A particular sensor has malfunctioned but you don't have time to replace it before you need to arm your Alarm again.
  • You’ve pulled the tab on a security device that has been paired to your Alarm or Alarm Pro Base Station, but haven’t yet finished setting up the device.
  • You are updating your compatible alarm sensor firmware and need to bypass a particular sensor.

How to bypass a sensor via the Ring app

  • Select your arming mode (
    Home or Away
    ).
    • The app will show a message listing any sensors that need to be bypassed. That includes devices that are tripped, scheduled to update, or in the process of updating. You’ll be asked if you want to bypass. If confirmed, the Alarm will arm. If declined, the Alarm will remain disarmed.

Your Alarm can bypass any sensor when in Home or Away mode. The Ring app will inform you of the bypassed sensors before changing the mode. A push notification* will be sent when all sensors are bypassed. Digital notifications require a Ring Protect Plan subscription. Bypassed sensors will also be listed in the Alarm history* event feed. A bypassed sensor will not trigger the alarm and will not trigger emergency response for those enrolled in professional monitoring.¹

Note: When the Ring Alarm is on Alarm Cellular Backup,² arming the system will cause any faulted sensors to be automatically bypassed.

*Ring Alarm and all Ring Alarm accessories require a subscription for digital notifications, in-app features, digital arming/disarming, and integration with other Ring, Echo, and third party products. Subscription sold separately. View ring.com/protect-plans for pricing and details.

How to bypass a sensor on your Keypad

  1. Enter PIN.
  2. Select your arming mode (
    Home or Away
    ).
  3. Your Keypad will state that a sensor requires bypass.
    • Press the ‘check’ button to confirm the bypass.
    • To decline bypass, wait and allow it to timeout.
    • To view the sensors that require bypass, open the Ring app.

Your Alarm can bypass any sensor when you arm in Home or Away mode*. The Ring app will inform you of the bypassed sensors before changing the mode, and a push notification* will be sent when all sensors are bypassed. A bypassed sensor will not trigger the burglar alarm.

Note: When Ring Alarm is on Cellular Backup, arming the Alarm will cause any faulted sensors to be automatically bypassed.

Additional notes

  • If you have a Z-Wave lock, arming via lock will automatically bypass faulted sensors.
  • When using Alarm Mode Schedules* to arm your system, sensors that are tripped, not fully setup, or updating, will be bypassed automatically. The Alarm history event timeline will indicate that a sensor or sensors have been bypassed by a schedule.
  • Your Ring Alarm will still arm even if all sensors are bypassed.

¹ A compatible Ring Protect subscription is required to enroll in the Ring Alarm professional monitoring service. Professional monitoring service is available only within the U.S. (all 50 states, but not U.S. territories) and in Canada (excluding Quebec). Ring does not own its own professional monitoring center. Smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring is not available for a business or commercially zoned address. See Ring alarm licenses at: ring.com/licenses. Additional permit or false alarm fees may apply depending on your local jurisdiction. Additional charges may apply in areas that require permits or guard response service for alarm verification.
² A compatible Ring Protect subscription required, sold separately. Alarm Cellular Backup uses a third-party carrier. Coverage will vary.
