How to install, clean, and test your Kidde smoke alarm

Before you start

For installing or cleaning your Kidde unit, you will need:

• Your Kidde smoke alarm unit, with battery tab if battery-powered
• Full installation manual / User Guide (included in box) for installations
• Compressed air canister or vacuum with soft brush attachment for cleaning
• Dry cloth for exterior cleaning

How to install your Kidde smoke alarm

Follow these steps to install your Kidde smoke alarm correctly.

1. Keep the alarm at least three feet away from ducts, vents, fans, and fluorescent lights.
2. Pull the battery tab (if present) before mounting. The alarm beeps once to confirm activation.
3. If there is ongoing construction or renovation, keep the dust cover on until it is complete. Remove the dust cover before occupancy. The alarm will not work with the dust cover in place.

For wired models, carefully follow the instructions in your installation manual, and contact a qualified electrician for proper installation.

Maintaining a clean alarm

Clean your Kidde smoke alarm regularly to ensure reliable detection and reduce nuisance or false alarms. If the alarm chirps three times every 60 seconds, it needs cleaning.

• Clean the alarm when you take possession of a new home.
• Clean the alarm again after the majority of move-in activity is complete.
• Clean the alarm at least once a year. Clean more often in dustier homes or homes with pets.

• Use compressed air or a vacuum with a soft brush to clear all openings on the alarm.
• Wipe the exterior with a dry cloth. Do not use water or liquid cleaners.

Testing your Kidde smoke alarm regularly

Test your smoke alarm every week to confirm it is working correctly.

1. Press the Test button once.
2. Stand two to three feet away from the alarm, or wear ear protection, before pressing the button. Alarms are loud.
3. Listen for the alarm to sound. Replace the alarm immediately if it does not sound.

How to stop nuisance or false alarms on your Kidde smoke alarm

If your Kidde smoke alarm is sounding without a fire present, follow these steps to silence and resolve it.

1. Hush:

   Press the Hush/Test button to silence the alarm.
2. Clean:

   Use compressed air or a vacuum to clear all openings on the alarm.
3. Push-to-Test:

   Press the Hush/Test button again to test the alarm after cleaning.

You can cancel false smoke alarms during calls with the Ring monitoring center, from the Keypad, or in the Ring app.

Important note: Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms cannot be canceled. Local laws require the fire department to respond to every CO alarm immediately to make sure everyone is safe.
