Using Remote Unlock with your Ring Intercom device

With Remote Unlock, Ring Intercom Audio and Ring Intercom Video allows you to unlock the entrance of your building from your mobile device or compatible smart watch via the Ring app or from a widget on your home screen, wherever you are. Learn More about using the Ring Unlock Widget and How to Use Ring Intercom With Your Alexa-enabled Device or Smart Watch.

Important: if you can only unlock the building entrance when someone buzzes your existing intercom, you have a ring-to-open system. You will not be able to use Remote Unlock unless someone has buzzed.

Please check if the following conditions apply and, if so, contact Ring Intercom Customer Support so they can manually set your device as ring-to-open:

  • Your intercom opens one door or multiple doors with the same unlock button
  • You can only unlock the building entrance when someone buzzes your existing intercom
  • When sending an unlock via Ring app (without an incoming call), unlock notification shows as successful, but door is not opening or (if your intercom opens multiple doors with the same button) the wrong door is opening.

How to unlock your building entrance with Remote Unlock

For Ring Intercom users without a ring-to-open system:

  1. Tap the menu icon ☰ in the upper left of the app screen.
  2. Tap
    Devices.
  3. Tap your Ring Intercom.
  4. Tap
    Unlock Door
    .

For Ring Intercom users with a ring-to-open system:

  1. When someone buzzes at your building's entrance, you will receive a real-time alert from the Ring app via your smartphone or tablet.
  2. Tap
    Talk
to speak to the visitor or
    Unlock Door
    to unlock your building’s entrance.

How to set Unlock Duration

If your existing intercom is an analogue system, you can control how long your door is unlocked for, between 1 and 10 seconds.

  1. Tap the menu (☰) in the upper left of the app screen.
  2. Tap
    Devices
    .
  3. Tap your Ring Intercom.
  4. Tap
    Device Settings
    .
  5. Tap
    Unlock Duration
(available for analogue intercom systems only)
  6. Set your unlock duration.
    • Your setting will save automatically.

Note: If your lobby callbox configuration controls the unlock duration of the entrance, the Unlock Duration setting in the Ring app may not work.

What to do if the Remote Unlock feature isn't working?

Some intercom systems have technical limitations that stop the immediate use of the Remote Unlock feature. On these systems (ring-to-open systems), the call button for your apartment must be pressed before the building entrance can be unlocked remotely. If you are experiencing this issue and you would like to confirm whether your intercom system has this limitation, check if the following conditions apply:

  • Your intercom opens one door or multiple doors with the same unlock button
  • You can only unlock the building entrance only when someone buzzes your existing intercom
  • When sending an unlock via Ring app (without an incoming call), unlock notification shows as successful, but door is not opening or (if your intercom opens multiple doors with the same button) the wrong door is opening.

If these conditions apply, your Ring Intercom device might need to be manually set as ring-to-open. Please contact Ring Intercom Customer Support so they can do this for you.
