How to connect your Ring Mobile Security Tower to the internet using Starlink

What to know

A Mobile Security Tower connects to a Starlink satellite internet source by wired Ethernet through the cellular modem. Setup requires enabling Bypass Mode on the Starlink router, which disables its wifi and automatic IP address assignment so that the cellular modem can obtain a connection directly from the Starlink network.

Learn more about the Mobile Security Tower

Equipment needed

  • A Starlink dish and router (Standard, Mini, or Business model), powered on and showing Online status in the Starlink app
  • A Cat5e or better Ethernet cable
  • A standard 100-watt AC outlet for Starlink
  • The Starlink and Ring apps installed on your phone (iOS or Android)

Setup process

  1. Plug the Starlink dish and router into an outlet and power them on.
  2. For the initial setup, wait up to five minutes for the dish to establish a satellite connection.
  3. Open the Starlink app and confirm the status shows Online.

Bypass Mode disables the Starlink router's wifi and automatic IP address assignment, allowing the cellular modem to receive a direct connection from the Starlink network.

  1. Open the Starlink app on your phone.
  2. Tap
    Settings
    (the gear icon).
  3. Tap
    Network
    .
  4. Scroll down to
    Bypass Mode
    .
  5. Toggle
    Bypass Mode
    to ON.
  6. Confirm the prompt, which warns that the Starlink router's wifi and automatic IP address assignment (called Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol or DHCP in the app) will be disabled.
  7. Wait approximately 30 seconds for the router to restart in Bypass Mode. The Starlink router's wifi LED turns off, confirming that Bypass Mode is active.

  1. Plug an Ethernet cable from the Starlink router's Ethernet port into the cellular modem's wide area network (WAN) port.
  2. After connecting, the cellular modem will automatically receive a network address from Starlink.
    • If you check the modem's status and see an address starting with 100.64, this is normal and means the connection is working correctly.
  3. Confirm that the cellular modem's local area network (LAN) side continues to serve 192.168.1.x to the Mobile Security Tower.

Verify the Mobile Security Tower's connectivity

Open the Ring app and confirm that the Mobile Security Tower is online. Next, verify that the device is using Ethernet with the below steps:

  1. Tap the menu (☰).
  2. Tap
    Devices
    .
  3. Tap on the Mobile Security Tower.
  4. Tap
    Device Health

Troubleshooting

The Mobile Security Tower will not connect via Ethernet through Starlink.

Open the Starlink app and enable Bypass Mode with the below steps:

    to ON.

The cellular modem does not get internet from the Starlink router.

  1. Verify that the Ethernet cable is plugged into the modem's WAN port, not the LAN port.
  2. Open the Starlink app and confirm the status shows Online.

I am unable to access Starlink settings after enabling Bypass Mode.

  • Use the Starlink app via Bluetooth to access settings.
  • Alternatively, temporarily disable Bypass Mode to regain wifi access.

The Starlink wifi is still broadcasting after enabling Bypass Mode.

  2. Toggle
    Bypass Mode
    off.
  3. Wait for 30 seconds.
  4. Toggle
    Bypass Mode
    back on.

The Mobile Security Tower shows Ethernet in the Ring app Device Health settings, but has no internet connection.

  1. Power cycle the Mobile Security Tower by flipping the breakers to the OFF position for one minute, then flipping them back to the ON position.
  2. Open the Starlink app and verify that a stable satellite connection is active.
