Ring Intercom

Wiring differences between Ring Intercom (2022) and Ring Intercom (2024)

While Ring Intercom (2024) features improved audio quality and broader compatibility, it also comes with a few key changes in wiring configuration compared with the previous version, Ring Intercom (2022). You can use Ring Intercom (2022) instructions or custom wiring with Ring Intercom (2024) so long as you keep in mind the wiring differences between the two models.

It is important that, whenever possible, you follow official wiring instructions for your device version. The Ring app will automatically detect your device during setup and should provide the appropriate wiring instructions. However, if you are using instructions for a different Ring Intercom model, the following wiring information can help you adapt those instructions to get your device installed and working.

How to find which Ring Intercom model you have

You can determine which Ring Intercom model you have by looking at the device label on the unit and checking which model number (located under Ring logo) is shown:

Key wiring differences between the two Ring Intercom models

Ring Intercom (2024) devices come with one universal cable labelled C. Ring Intercom (2022) devices come with three cables labelled A, B, and C.

While the Ring app will show the instructions for your detected Ring Intercom model, if you want to adapt previous instructions or custom wiring developed for Ring Intercom (2022), carefully examine the wiring differences detailed in the table below.

How do I know if I have custom wiring?

Some scenarios where custom wiring instructions may be necessary include:

  1. Non-standard handset wiring where internal wiring differs from standard installations for a compatible handset.
  2. External doorbells, buzzers, and unlock buttons that are not part of the compatible handset.
  3. Handsets of unknown compatibility which have been made compatible through third-party wiring instructions.

Note on device grounds

Ring Intercom (2024) can have up to three separate ground wires for audio, unlock, and ring, while Ring Intercom (2022) has one shared ground for all of these functions. While some analogue intercom will use separate grounds (e.g. Urmet 1130/12), for other analogue intercoms, the device may still short them internally (e.g. Urmet CS 1131-002G). For Ring Intercom (2024), the main device ground is at pin 4 (C-4), but for Ring Intercom (2022), pin 1 (A-1 or C-1) is typically used as ground. By default, on Ring Intercom (2024) the grounds are shorted together and C-4 should be used. However, on systems which require separate grounds, the setup instructions may also specify C-1 and/or C-7 for use.
