Understanding How Third-Party Developer Apps Use Your Data
When you connect a third-party app from the Ring Appstore to your Ring devices, you're authorizing Ring to share certain data to enable new features and services. Here's what you need to know about how developer apps use your data.
What data gets shared
Before any app can access your Ring device data, you'll see a clear authorization screen that shows exactly what information will be shared. This includes some of the following data elements, but may vary depending on what the developer has indicated as necessary for their app.
Live View: Real-time video streaming from your cameras.
Motion Events: Notifications when motion is detected.
Doorbell Press Events: Notifications when doorbell is pressed.
Video Snapshots: Recorded video clips from events.
Device Status: Information about whether your devices are online and functioning You choose which specific Ring devices to share with each app, and you must explicitly agree and complete the integration process before any data sharing begins.
Your control over data sharing
Before connection:
- You'll see a detailed permissions screen listing all Ring device data the app will access.
- The app must clearly explain what it will do with your data.
- You must tapAgree and Continueto authorize the connection.
- You can cancel at any time before completing setup.
After connection:
You can stop sharing data anytime through Ring Appstore settings. This will revoke an app's access immediately, which terminates all further data sharing until you authorize data sharing again. Please note data that has already been shared with the third-party developer may still be used and retained by the developer.
Understanding developers' responsibilities and Ring's role in handling your data
Third-party developers must disclose information before you connect any app: what data they collect (the specific types of Ring data they'll receive), how they'll use it, such as for AI analytics or security monitoring, how long they'll keep it (their data retention policies), and their privacy policy with a link to their complete terms.
Third-party developers are also responsible for securing your data according to their privacy commitments, using it only for agreed purposes, following their stated retention and deletion policies, and complying with applicable privacy laws. This includes complying with any data or account deletion requests.
Ring provides secure data transmission while your data is being sent to the third-party app. However, after your data is shared with the third-party app, the developer (not Ring) is responsible for its security and use. Ring vets all third-party apps through a certification process to verify privacy standards and requires developers to sign agreements with data protection requirements.
Making informed decisions
Before connecting any app, we recommend that you:
- Review the permissions screen carefully:Understand exactly what data will be shared.
- Read the app's privacy policy:Know how your data will be used and protected.
- Check the app description:Ensure the requested data matches the app's stated functionality.
- Start with limited devices:You can always add more devices later.
- Monitor your active integrations:Regularly review connected apps in Ring Appstore settings.
