Understanding Advanced Pre-Roll for Wired Ring Devices

If you’re subscribed to an eligible Ring subscription, your Ring devices record video each time someone triggers a motion sensor or presses the doorbell button.

All wired Ring Video Doorbells and Security Cameras have Advanced Pre-Roll, which adds additional video to the start of these recordings, so you can see what happened before the event was triggered.

This includes:

  • Hardwired-only Video Doorbells, like Wired Doorbell Plus (formerly Video Doorbell Pro), Wired Doorbell Pro (formerly Video Doorbell Pro 2), Video Doorbell Wired and Video Doorbell Elite
  • Hardwired-only Security Cameras, like Floodlight Cam Pro and Floodlight Cam Plus
  • Plug-in cameras like Indoor Cam, Stick Up Cam Elite and Stick Up Cam Pro Plug-In
  • Hybrid Security Cameras, like Spotlight Cam Pro and Spotlight Cam Plus, set up in wired mode

Note: If you own a Video Doorbell 3 Plus, Video Doorbell 4, Spotlight Cam Pro Battery or Stick Up Cam Pro Battery/Solar, Pre-Roll works differently. Learn about Pre-Roll for these devices.

Learn about the differences between Pre-Roll and Advanced Pre-Roll.

What is Advanced Pre-Roll?

The Advanced Pre-Roll feature enables you to view more complete motion events with your wired Ring device. A Ring Video Doorbell with Advanced Pre-Roll will capture the previous six seconds before a motion event is triggered, getting the critical seconds of activity and attaching it to the event clip. This provides you with a better look at what's happening outside your door.

Is Advanced Pre-Roll always on?

Advanced Pre-Roll is always enabled for wired Ring devices.

Do I have to subscribe to a Ring subscription to be able to use Advanced Pre-Roll?

Yes. Advanced Pre-Roll enhances recordings of events, and video event recording is one of the advantages to subscribing to a Ring subscription plan.
