Connecting your Base Station to the internet

Your Base Station connects to the internet through wifi or an Ethernet cable.

If you use an Ethernet cable, run it away from the Base Station. Don't place the cable over the speaker or LED ring on the front of the Base Station.

If your Base Station fails to connect, you can troubleshoot set up errors. Check troubleshooting messages during Base Station setup.

Adding your devices to your Base Station

The setup process varies based on whether you bought your Alarm devices separately or as part of a kit with your Base Station.

Alarm Kit set up

Alarm Kits can come with four types of devices:

  • Contact Sensor:
These two-part devices connect through a magnetic field. Place them on doors or windows. When you arm the system, the alarm triggers if the door or window opens and breaks the magnetic contact.
  • Motion Detector:
This device detects movement using Passive Infrared (PIR) technology and triggers the alarm. PIR senses heat from moving objects.
  • Keypad:
Use the keypad to arm and disarm your system.
  • Range Extender:
This device extends the range of the Z-Wave network - the wireless communication system your Base Station uses to connect with other devices.

To put your devices into setup mode:

  • Contact Sensor and Motion Detector:
Pull out the tab on the back when prompted.
  • Keypad:
Plug the power cable into the bottom.
  • Range Extender:
Plug it into a wall outlet.

Important note: If you purchased an Alarm Kit, your Base Station will automatically find and add your devices. Once you have added them, you can rename and assign them to a room. Learn more about placing sensors and Motion Detectors.

Installing your Base Station

You can install your Base Station almost anywhere.

Place it on a flat surface or mount it on a wall. Screws and anchors are not included.

Choose the right location:

  • For connectivity: Place it where wifi reception is strong. Or place it near your router if you're using an Ethernet connection.
  • For sound: Install it where the siren can be heard throughout your home.
  • For device coverage: Choose a central location. This improves Z-Wave network coverage in all directions.
  • Don’t use the Base Station outdoors or in an environment with extreme temperatures or humidity.
  • Don’t use the Base Station near corrosive chemicals.
