Setting up your Ring Video Doorbell (1st Gen) in the Ring app

Learn how to set up your Ring Video Doorbell (1st Gen) in the Ring app.

Setup for Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) is the same as Ring Video Doorbell (1st Gen), but some features are different. To find out which doorbell model you have, click here. 

Download the Ring app

To download the Ring app:

  1. On your mobile device, go to the
    (for iOS devices) or the
    (for Android devices) 
  2. Search for “Ring”
  3. Download and install the Ring app on your mobile device

Or visit ring.com/app on your mobile device.

Create or log in to your account

If this is your first Ring product, you will be asked to set up an account.

To set up an account:

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Select “Create Account.”
  3. Follow the in-app instructions to create a new account.

If you already have another Ring device installed, simply open the Ring app and skip to the next step.

Scan the QR code or MAC ID barcode on your Ring device

  1. Tap the
    menu
    (≡)
    on the left side of your dashboard in the
    Ring app
  2. Tap
    Set up a Device
    and select
    Doorbells
  3. Tap
    I’m Ready to Scan
  4. Point your smartphone camera at the QR code on your Ring device or product packaging
  5. Centre the code in the camera's view in the bottom half of the screen
  6. When the code is recognised, you will see a green square and a pop-up with your device image

If you experience issues when scanning the QR code:

  • Move your camera closer or further from the QR code to help it focus
  • Once your camera finds focus, hold it steady for a few seconds
  • If your camera won’t focus, clean your camera lens, move to a well-lit area, and try again

If you continue to experience issues:

  1. Tap
    Other Options
    below the scanner
  2. Tap
    Can’t Scan the QR code
  3. Tap
    Enter code manually
    (this corresponds to PIN code digits underneath the QR code)
  4. Find your device in the list
  5. Enter your five digit PIN which can be found below the QR code

Specify your location

If this is your first time setting up a Ring device, you will receive a request from your phone informing you that the Ring app wishes to use your phone’s location services to pinpoint your location. Allowing the app to do so will assist with inputting your address.

Enter your address information into the app, then confirm it.

If you have established a location previously, you can select it from the list of your locations.

Note: Without a specific location, certain features of your Ring Video Doorbell will not work properly.

Name your device

Select a specific name for your Ring Video Doorbell to distinguish it from other Ring devices on your account. You can choose one of the default names that are suggested, or you can enter your own by selecting “Custom…” at the bottom of the list.

Put your Video Doorbell into setup mode

Press and release the orange button on the back of your Ring Video Doorbell. When there is a spinning white light on the front of your Ring Video Doorbell, tap Continue button in your Ring app.

Connect to your Ring device

iOS: Tap Join when the Ring app asks to join the Ring wifi network.

Android: Your device should automatically connect to the Ring wifi network.

If your device does not automatically connect to the Ring wifi network, or if you chose to continue without scanning, please follow the steps below:

  1. Exit the Ring app to your phone's home screen.
  2. Navigate to your
    Settings
    app.
  3. Go to the wifi/network settings.
  4. Select the Ring wifi network from the list of available networks. The network will appear as either:
    • "Ring-"
      followed by the last six digits of the MAC address, the unique device identifier on the back of the device.
    • "Ring Setup"
      followed by the last two digits of the MAC address, the unique device identifier on the back of the device.
  5. Once connected, return to the Ring app.

Important! The Ring wifi network is a temporary access point you will only use for device setup. If, during setup, you get a message on your mobile device that says "no internet connection" or something similar, it is not a cause for concern – just join the Ring network and continue with setup.

Connect your device to your wifi

Make sure you’re within range of your router and have your wifi password ready.

  1. Select your wifi network
    . If you have more than one network, select the one closest to where you will be installing your Ring Video Doorbell.
  2. Enter your wifi password.
  3. Press
    Continue
    .

After connecting to your wifi network, your Ring Video Doorbell may update its internal software. While updating, the light on the front of your device will flash white. Please do not attempt to ring the doorbell at this time, as it will delay the update.

Once the light stops flashing, the update is complete and you can continue the the next step.

Test your device

Once your doorbell has completed its updates and setup, push the front button to test your doorbell.
