Understanding wifi recommendations for Ring devices
Find out how strong wifi signals and fast internet help your Ring devices and app work better.
Important note: Ring doorbells and cameras require an active internet connection to function.
Checking wifi signal strength
The quality of your Ring device's wifi connection is measured with the received signal strength indicator (RSSI). Check your device's wifi signal by following these steps:
- Open the Ring app to the main dashboard.
- Tap more (•••) on the camera you want to access.
- Tap your device's Settings.
- Tap theDevice Healthtile.
- Check theSignal Strength.
RSSI | Quality | Performance |
|---|---|---|
0 to -60 | Great | Strong |
-60 to -70 | Okay | Could be improved |
-70 to -80 | Poor | Possible delays and interruptions in service |
-80 or worse | Very poor | Intermittent service or falling offline |
Things that can affect your wifi signal strength
Wifi signals get weaker the farther you are from the router, and these objects can make signals even weaker:
- Walls made of brick, stucco, or metal
- Big objects like fridges or ovens
- Electronics
- Mirrors
Improving wifi signal strength
To improve wifi strength, move your Ring device closer to your router. You can also purchase a Chime Pro, or purchase an eero mesh router. For Chime Pro users, run the in-app placement test to find the best location.
Internet speeds for Ring devices
Your internet has two types of speed:
- Download speed: This measures how quickly data downloads to your device.
- Upload speed: This measures how quickly data uploads from your device.
Checking wifi speeds
To see if your internet is as fast as it should be, follow these steps:
- Run a speed test on your computer or mobile phone.
- Look at the results for both download and upload speeds.
- Compare these numbers to what your internet company said you would get.
If the speeds from your test are lower than what you pay for, reach out to your internet provider.
Upload speeds needed for your Ring device
Ring devices that show higher resolution video need faster internet. Your Ring device will adjust video quality based on your internet speed, but needs at least 1 Mbps to work.
Resolution | Upload speed per device |
|---|---|
4K | 15 Mbps |
2K | 10 Mbps |
1536p | 2.5 Mbps |
1080p | 2 Mbps |
720p | 1 Mbps |
If you are unsure how fast your internet should be for your Ring device, check the box your device came in, or look at the ring.com product page for your device. To confirm which Ring doorbell or camera you have, check the Ring app.
Upload speeds needed for multiple Ring devices
When you have more than one Ring device, your wifi speed requirements will increase. Follow these steps to figure out the speeds needed for multiple devices:
- Find out how much internet speed each device needs.
- Add these speeds together.
- The total is how fast your internet should be.
For example:
- You have a Ring doorbell that needs 2 Mbps
- You also have a Ring camera that needs 3.5 Mbps
- Add these together: 2 + 3.5 = 5.5 Mbps
So, in this case, your internet should be at least 5.5 Mbps to run both devices.
Running speed tests
Your internet might be slow because of your service or where your devices are placed. To check this, run speed tests in two places: next to your router and where your Ring device is.
- Connect your mobile device to the same wifi as your Ring device.
- Turn off any virtual private network (VPN) connections.
- Click on theGobutton to start the test.
Issues with wifi speeds
Call your internet company if a speed test next to your router shows any of these problems:
- Your internet is too slow for your Ring device to work as intended.
- Your internet speed is less than 1 Mbps.
- You're getting less than 60% of the internet speed you're paying for.
