Fixing setup issues
Learn how to resolve issues with setting up a Ring device in the Ring app.
Preparing for setup
- Have your wifi password available.
- Keep your mobile device close to the Ring device throughout the setup process.
Light pattern guides
Check the light pattern guide to find out why your Ring device is not connecting.
Unable to connect your Ring device to your wifi network
If setup fails, check your Ring device's light pattern or audio message. For network changes, contact your internet provider or router manufacturer.
Setup failed: Incorrect wifi password
Follow these steps to confirm the wifi password is correct:
- Open your mobile device’s wifi settings.
- Select your network's info icon and tapForget Network.
- Reconnect using your wifi password.
- If your mobile device cannot connect using the same wifi password after using Forget Network, contact your internet service provider.
Setup failed: Distance from wifi router or special characters in the wifi name
- If your Ring device is far away from your router, use a wifi extender, such as, or a mesh router to improve the wifi signal strength.
- Remove special characters from your wifi network name (e.g. apostrophes, spaces, !, @, #, $, %, &).
Setup failed: Unable to connect to internet
- Adjust firewall, ports, and protocols on your wifi router..
- Unplug all Ethernet cables from your router, except the main internet connection between your router and modem or wall outlet.
- Test your internet connection by loading ring.com when connected to the same wifi network on your mobile device.
- Having more than one wifi router can cause connection problems with Ring devices. Use only one router, or set up bridge mode with support from your internet service provider or router manufacturer, if needed.
Unable to scan the QR code
If your device has a removable faceplate or battery cover, the QR code might be underneath. You might also find the code on the product package or setup guide.
- Make sure you have enough lighting and the QR code is in focus.
- If your mobile device is not scanning the QR code, tapSet up a non-Ring device or choose manuallyto continue through the setup process.
Unable to find your address
If your address doesn’t populate when you try to add your location, try these tips:
- Turn on location permissions for the Ring app. Consult your mobile device provider for help, if needed.
- Place the pin on the map for new or unlisted addresses.
- Confirm you are signed in to the correct account, if you cannot find your existing location.
- Manually enter your address.
Unable to find or connect to the Ring wifi network
The Ring wifi network is a wifi access point that appears when your device is in setup mode.
- For battery-powered devices: Make sure the battery is charged and device powers on.
- For wired or plug-in devices:
- Verify the device is in setup mode.
- Use a different mobile device for setup.
- If your device is unable to find or connect to the Ring wifi network, perform a factory reset or power cycle your device before attempting a new setup.
Unable to find your wifi network during setup
If your wifi network is not appearing during the network selection of the setup process, check the following:
- Move the Ring device closer to your wifi router.
- Verify your mobile device can connect to the wifi network.
- If you have separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, and the 5 GHz is not appearing, try connecting to your 2.4 GHz network instead. Some Ring devices only support 2.4 GHz networks.
Incompatible network error
This error appears when your Ring device detects a wifi network that uses a network encryption that the Ring device doesn't support, for example WPA3. This is not a signal strength issue, your device can see the network but cannot connect to it.
Affected devices
- Ring Video Doorbell 3
- Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus
- Ring Video Doorbell 4
- Stick Up Cam Pro
- Spotlight Cam Pro
How to fix Incompatible Network error
Important note: If you are unsure how to adjust router settings, contact your internet service provider for assistance.
To best resolve this issue follow the below steps:
- Sign into your router’s admin panel or internet service provider application.
- Navigate to Wi-Fi Security settings.
- Change the network type to WPA2-Personal
- If you see a “PMF” or “Protected Management Frames” option, set it to Disabled
- Save and restart your router.
- Attempt to set up the Ring device again.
Alternatively, if you cannot change your router settings, you can use a separate 2.4 GHz WPA2 network. Some routers broadcast a secondary network that uses WPA2. Look for a network name that does not show the Incompatible Network label during setup.
What to do if setup still fails after changing to WPA2
If you changed your router to WPA2 but setup still fails:
- Factory reset your Ring device by pressing and holding the setup button for 20 seconds, then releasing.
- Wait for the light on your device to flash, then retry setup.
Factory reset your device
If you continue to experience setup issues, try performing a factory reset on your device. Learn how to factory reset or power cycle your device.
Important note: If you continue experiencing setup issues after trying these steps, contact Ring Support for additional assistance.
