What is the Solar Charger for the Ring Video Doorbell (1st Generation)?

The Solar Charger for the Ring Video Doorbell is a small device that can be mounted behind your Ring Video Doorbell and connected to it with an included micro-USB cable. The Solar Charger for Ring Video Doorbell is convenient power to help charge and extend the battery life of your Ring Video Doorbell. 

Note: It requires several hours of direct sunlight every day to recharge your device. Ability to recharge varies based on device settings, motion notifications and sun exposure in the area of placement - not ideal for porches.

Note: The Ring Solar Charger for Ring Video Doorbell (1st Generation) is not compatible with the Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation), Ring Video Doorbell 2, Ring Video Doorbell 3, Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus.

Compatibility & usage

Can I use the Solar Charger with my Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation), Ring Video Doorbell 2, Ring Video Doorbell 3, or Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus?

No. The Ring Solar Charger for Ring Video Doorbell (1st Generation) is specifically configured to work with the Ring Video Doorbell (1st Generation). 

Can I use the Solar Charger inside?

The Solar Charger is not recommended for use indoors. Indoor light sources will not provide enough energy to charge your Ring Video Doorbell 

Can I use my own micro-USB cable?

No. The included micro-USB cable cannot be swapped out for another.

Is Ring Solar Charger weather resistant?

Yes. The Solar Charger should give you reliable service through most weather conditions.

I live in an area that gets mostly cloudy, rainy days. Will Ring Solar Charger work for me?

No. The Ring Solar Charger requires several hours of sunlight each day to charge the Ring Video Doorbell (1st generation).

Installation 

How do I mount Ring Solar Charger?

You can mount Ring Solar Charger directly into wood using the provided screws and screwdriver. If you are mounting to brick, concrete, or stucco, do the following:

  • If your Ring Video Doorbell was already mounted on your home, go ahead and remove the mounting bracket.
  • Using the provided screws and anchors, mount your solar charger to the exterior wall.
  • Connect the micro-USB cable to the charging port on the back of your Ring Video Doorbell.
  • Attach your Ring Video Doorbell to your Solar Charger.
  • Tighten the security screws on the bottom of your Ring Video Doorbell.

Note: You should avoid mounting the Ring Solar Charger on porches or in shady areas.

After I mount the Ring Video Doorbell in the Solar Charger, do I need to activate it in the Ring app?

No. The Solar Charger is just a power source. As soon as you plug it into the Ring Video Doorbell it starts working (but only provides power when receiving direct sunlight).

Once the Solar Charger starts working, does that show up in the Ring app?

No. The Device Health page for your Ring Video Doorbell will continue to show that the power source is a battery.

Is it normal for the blue light to go on and off? Does this mean it's charging?

No. If your Ring Video Doorbell does this, it means that it  is still updating and installing the firmware update. Give it a few minutes to complete. 

Do I have to drill new holes in the wall to install the Solar Charger?

No. The Solar Charger can be mounted using the same holes as the original bracket. 

Note: If you used a wedge or corner kit, you will need to drill new holes.
