Controlling Works with Ring Smart Locks with Alexa

Connect a Works with Ring Alarm-compatible smart lock to your Ring Alarm Base Station. Then, use simple Alexa voice commands to lock and unlock your smart locks. Learn about Works with Ring-compatible locks.    Connect your Amazon Alexa devices to Ring, and use Alexa voice commands to:

  • Lock and unlock by voice
  • Check lock status
  • Create automations to lock or unlock your door


Connecting your smart locks with Alexa

First, add your smart lock to your Ring Alarm system. Next, connect your Amazon Alexa-enabled devices with Ring. Once complete, you can control your locks by talking to Alexa through your Echo device or the Alexa app.


Configuring unlock by voice for your Works with Ring Smart Lock

Configure unlock by voice, and create a voice code:

  1. In the Alexa app, tap the
    lightbulb
    devices icon in the bottom navigation bar.
  2. Locate and tap your smart lock from the device list.
  3. Tap
    the
    gear
    settings icon settings in the top right corner.
  4. Toggle
    Unlock by Voice and Echo Hub
    on.
  5. Create your voice code. The Alexa app will ask for your Amazon account password that you use for your Alexa-compatible device.


Using voice commands to control your Works with Ring Smart Lock with Alexa

To lock or unlock a smart lock, say: “Alexa, lock the [front door].”

  • Once locked or unlocked, Alexa will respond with:
    “The [front door] is locked"
    or
    "The [front door] is unlocked.”
  • If there is an issue with the smart lock, Alexa will respond:
    “I’m not sure [front door] is locked, because it’s jammed.”
  • Locking or unlocking a smart lock using voice commands will be registered as an event in the Device History screen in your Ring app.

Important note: When unlocking by voice, Alexa will then ask you for your voice code to complete the action.


To check the status of a smart lock, say: “Alexa, is the [front door] locked/unlocked?”

  • Alexa will respond with the current state of the lock.

Important note: "[front door]" is an example and might differ from the location labels that you assigned to your device(s) during setup. Other examples: main door, side door, entrance, etc.


Creating a Routine to lock Works with Ring Smart Locks with Alexa

Create an Alexa Routine to automate your Works with Ring Smart Locks. Set up Alexa to lock all connected smart locks automatically on a schedule. You can also lock them instantly with a single voice command.

To create a Routine to lock all doors at night:

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap the three lines icon on the bottom navigation bar.
  3. Select the
    Routines
    tile.
  4. Tap the
    +
    icon to
    Create Routine
    .
  5. Tap
    Add an event
    under the
    When
    section.
  6. Tap
    Voice
    .
  7. Enter a custom phrase to trigger the action. For example, entering “good night” will trigger all doors to lock when you say,
    “Alexa, good night.”
  8. Tap
    Next
    .
  9. Tap
    Add an action
    under the
    Alexa Will
    section.
  10. Tap
    Smart Home.
  11. Tap
    Locks
    and select any available lock device.
  12. Tap
    Add.
  13. Tap
    Add an action
    under the
    Alexa Will
    section.
  14. Repeat the steps to add each lock to the Alexa Routine.
  15. Tap
    Save
    .

Additional actions, such as turning off Alexa-connected Smart Lights, also can be added to your smart lock Routine.
