Setting Up, Enrolling and Unenrolling in Video End-to-End Encryption

Bring advanced protection to your home with Video End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) for your Ring devices. In order to use E2EE, you will need both the Ring app installed on an enrolled mobile device and a compatible Ring device.

Mobile device compatibility

  • iOS 15 or newer
  • Android 9 or newer

Video E2EE works with Ring app versions 5.34.0 and higher and Android 3.34.0 and higher. See how to update your Ring app.

Ring doorbell and camera compatibility

All video doorbells and security cameras except Video Doorbell (1st Generation), Ring Video Doorbell Wired, and Stick Up Cam (1st Gen) support video End-to-End Encryption.

Setting up Video End-to-End Encryption

Update your mobile device and Ring app.

We often improve features. Make sure you have the latest version of the Ring app.

Go to Control Center in the Ring app.

  1. Open the Ring app to the main dashboard.

  2. Tap the
    menu (☰)
    .
  3. Tap
    Control Center
    .
  4. Tap
    Video Encryption.
  5. Tap
    Advanced Settings.
  6. Tap
    Video End-to-End Encryption.
  7. Tap
    End-to End Encryption
    .

Set up End-to-End Encryption

  1. Tap
    Enable End-to-End Encryption
    .
  2. Review information regarding E2EE and view impacted features. Tap
    Set Up End-to-End Encryption
    .
  3. Save the generated passphrase in a secure place.
    • Note
      : Write your passphrase down or store it in a secure password manager. When creating this passphrase, be sure to enter all lowercase letters, include the hyphens, and don’t add any spaces. If you lose your passphrase, you can’t enroll more mobile devices in E2EE, without starting over and re-enrolling. Also, you may lose access to E2EE videos that you have already recorded.
  4. Check “I saved the passphrase in a secure place.” box and tap
    Confirm and Continue
    .

Enroll your mobile device.

  1. Navigate to
    End-to-End Encryption
    in
    Control Center
    .
  2. If the mobile device is not enrolled as a viewing device, tap Enroll This Device to add it.
  3. You will be prompted to enter the passphrase to enroll the mobile device.
  4. Enter the passphrase and tap
    Continue
    .

Enroll your Ring devices.

  1. Navigate to
    End-to-End Encryption
    in Control Center
    .
  2. Tap
    Enrolled Ring Devices
    .
  3. Tap Enroll next to each of the supported devices you wish to enable End-to-End Encryption.
    • You will be prompted to
      Agree and Continue
      after reviewing impacted features.
    • You will need setup the Ring device once more during the E2EE enrollment.

Turning off/unenrolling in End-to-End Encryption

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap the
    menu
    (☰).
  3. Tap
    Control Center
    .
  4. Tap
    Video Encryption.
  5. Tap
    Video End-to-End Encryption.
  6. Tap
    Remove
    to confirm.
