A Ring Alarm Motion Detector mounted to corner in the living room

Troubleshooting Ring Alarm Motion Detectors for Astro

Motion Detectors are a crucial part of security and can keep your home safe while preventing false alarms and avoiding costly fines.

Update Motion Detector settings

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap the
    menu (☰)
    .
  3. Tap
    Devices
    .
  4. Tap the Motion Detector you would like to update.
  5. Tap the
    Motion Settings
    tile.
  6. Select
    Medium Detection
, or another detection level you'd prefer.

Use Practice Mode to adjust the sensitivity slider on your Ring Alarm without the worry of triggering a false alarm. Customize motion sensitivity to an amount that’s right for you and that won’t cause Astro to set off the alarm.

False alarms triggered by Astro

You can reduce false alarms when Astro is near Ring Alarm Motion Detectors by making sure Astro’s charger is at least 15 feet away from the Motion Detectors and that the Motion Detectors are installed at the recommended height:

  • Motion Detector (1st Generation): install at 7 feet high.
  • Motion Detector (2nd Generation): install at 7 feet 6 inches high.

Once you have ensured your Motion Detector is installed at the recommended height, double check that its motion setting is set to Medium Detection by following the in-app steps detailed under the above “Update Motion Detector Settings” section.

Setting Out of Bounds Zones

You can manage Out of Bounds Zones to keep Astro at least 15 feet away from their motion detectors. We recommend trying this troubleshooting option if false alarms are still occurring when motion detector settings are set at Medium Detection.

Setting Out of Bounds Zones

  1. Open the Astro app.
  2. Select
    Live View
    .
  3. Tap the
    Map
icon, and then expand it to go full screen.
  4. Tap the menu button in the top-right corner of the screen.
  5. Select
    Edit Map
    .
  6. Select the
    Out of Bounds
tool at the bottom of the screen. From here you can:
    • Add new zones
    • Delete zones
  7. After setting your out of bounds zones, select
    Save and Sync
    .

Creating an Out of Bounds Zone will prevent any user from driving Astro into the Out of Bounds Zone. Although Astro can’t enter an Out of Bounds Zone, it’s still possible to see into an Out of Bounds Zone using Astro’s camera.

Low Detection motion sensitivity for Astro

We strongly recommend that Motion Detectors are set to at least Medium Detection when using Astro.

If false alarms continue, you can set your Ring Motion Detector to Low Detection. However, using Low Detection at your home may lead to missed detections and may increase the time required to detect motion and trigger Ring Alarm.
