Using a Wedge Kit to Position Your Video Doorbell

Learn how and when to use a Wedge Kit to angle your Video Doorbell.

If you're installing a Video Doorbell on a house with aluminum siding or on a house where the door is at the top of a set of stairs, you can use a Wedge Kit to properly position the device. This will help catch visitor motion, but minimize "false positive" motion alerts, such as cars on the street.

Solar Chargers, Wedge Kits and Corner Kits

Solar Chargers can be used with a Wedge Kit or a Corner Kit. However, only one Wedge Kit or one Corner Kit is recommended. Stacking more than one Wedge Kit or Corner Kit changes the angle of the doorbell and can cast a shadow on the Solar Charger, making it less effective. Solar Chargers should have direct sunlight for optimal performance.

Your doorbell's field of view

Your Ring Video Doorbell first sees the world through a camera with a very wide view of the world:

Your doorbell's motion sensors are more focused to specific area, pointing down to catch motion between 5 and 30 feet away.

Siding on houses

If your house has siding, you'll need to take the angle of the siding into account when mounting your Ring Video Doorbell. Mounting the Ring Video Doorbell on siding will point the Ring Video Doorbell up, making it more likely to catch passing traffic than the heat of visitors. 

If you mount your Ring Video Doorbell on siding, a Wedge Kit will properly angle your Ring Doorbell.

Stairs leading up to your door

If your door is above ground level with stairs leading up to it, this can cause your Ring Video Doorbell to miss visitors walking up your stairs. It can also cause you to get motion alerts from passing traffic.  

The solution in this case is to use a Wedge Kit to lower the angle of your Ring Video Doorbell.
