Ring devices and extreme temperatures
Learn how to combat the effect of hot and cold weather on battery-powered Ring doorbells and security cameras.
Optimum temperatures for Ring devices
Ring devices perform optimally when their temperature is around 75°F (25°C). They can operate normally between -4°F and 122°F (-20°C and 50°C).
How to protect your device
Exposure to direct sunlight or other weather conditions may change the temperature of your device and affect battery performance. There are steps you can take to keep your device working properly and protect it when temperatures get too high or low.
Cold weather
When the temperature drops to around freezing, the battery life will not be as long. Once the weather warms up and the battery is recharged, your battery will return to normal.
Charging in cold weather
Your device is designed to stop charging if the temperature is below freezing. You may need to bring it inside to charge it with a USB cable, instead of waiting for it to solar charge.
Hot weather
Prolonged exposure to hot weather will negatively affect the overall lifetime of your battery. The sun can overheat your device. Install your device in a shaded area if possible.
Charging in hot weather
If your device gets too hot, it will not charge and may completely shut down. You may need to take it inside to cool down and permanently move it somewhere more shaded.
Monitor battery life and temperature
Keep an eye on the battery, especially in extreme temperatures. If the temperature is too hot or cold, you might notice charging issues or a shorter battery life.
