Ring Alarm Motion Detector settings
Learn more about adjusting settings and testing your Ring Alarm Motion Detector. Make sure your Motion Detector is placed for best performance.
Adjusting motion sensitivity
The Ring Motion Detector tracks heat and movement to notify you and trigger your alarm. Adjust your sensitivity settings to improve motion detection and prevent false alarms.
To access the Motion Detector's motion sensitivity settings:
Open the Ring app to the main dashboard.
Tap the Alarm tile under Devices.
Tap Connected Devices.
- Tap the Motion Detector you would like to update.
- TapMotion Settings.
- Select your preferred motion sensitivity.
- TapSave.
Low Sensitivity: This setting allows for slight movement in a space before it triggers the Alarm. Designed for locations where multiple pets or larger pets (up to 22 kg) will be left inside when Ring Alarm is armed in Away mode.
Medium Sensitivity: This setting allows for minimal movement in a space before it triggers the Alarm. Designed to accommodate one pet or several small pets (up to 13 kg) when Ring Alarm is armed in Away mode.
High Sensitivity: This setting is most sensitive and will trigger Ring Alarm immediately. Not recommended if you have pets.
Tips for using Motion Detectors with pets
- Test your Motion Detector to see if your pet(s) trigger your Ring Alarm. Use theTest Motionfeature to adjust your Motion Detector settings.
- Use your seven-day practice period to adjust the sensitivity slider on your Motion Detector so your animal no longer sets off the alarm.
- The slider only adjusts general sensitivity, and you might your pet sets off the alarm even when it is set to low sensitivity.
Testing your Motion Detector
To avoid false alarms, test your Motion Detector to make sure your motion settings are adjusted to your environment. Before starting the Motion Detector test, make sure your Ring Alarm is disarmed.
Open the Ring app to the main dashboard.
Tap the Alarm tile under Devices.
Tap Connected Devices.
- Tap the Motion Detector you want to test.
- TapTest Motionand follow the prompts in the Ring app.
- When you begin the Motion Detector test, it will enter a 15-minute test mode, which sends motion alerts more quickly.
- If anyone arms your Ring Alarm while testing the Motion Detector, any motion will set off the alarm. Complete all testing before arming your Alarm.
- Test the Motion Detector by moving in front of it. When motion is detected, you will see a “Motion detected” message in the Ring app.
- Once the Motion Detector goes off, it will go back to a cleared state in 30 seconds and be available to test again repeatedly for 15 minutes.
